SHIRLEY - Police and SPCA officials say they seized nearly two dozen pit bulls from a Shirley home yesterday and charged the owner with animal cruelty.Police arrested Edward Erdman, 38, for allegedly keeping the dogs in deplorable conditions. They say some of the dogs were living in their own excrement in cages stacked on top of one another and that the smell was overwhelming. Many of the dogs were thin and dehydrated, and had bite marks and scars. Investigators say it's unclear if the scarring is from dog-fighting. One dog had its tail partially cut off, SPCA workers say. Police say more charges may be filed as the investigation continues. Town of Brookhaven law allows residents to keep up to 10 adult dogs, and all must be registered. In this case, only one dog was registered, police say.A neighbor defended Erdman, saying he loves his dogs and has so many because he's a breeder. Erdman will face a judge in November. The dogs are currently being housed at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and are available for adoption.
