GARDEN CITY - Convicted women from Long Island graduated today from a special program that allowed them to pay their debt to society without seeing the inside of a jail cell. The women completed a six-month day program at Woman's Opportunity Rehabilitation Center (WORC). The program serves as an alternative to time behind bars. "The ultimate goal of the work program is to get these women employed," says WORC Executive Director Diane Gaines. "They're not draining taxpayers, they become taxpayers." The Hempstead-based program has fought an uphill battle. WORC was shut down two years ago when state funding disappeared, but Gaines and others didn't give up. Gaines says the program is now run on a volunteer basis. Graduates say WORC's program has given them a second chance.
