HUNTINGTON STATION - A convicted sex offender who is accused of stalking high school girls appeared before a judge today.

Officials say 56-year-old John Ferranti, a Level 3 sex offender, was arrested in Huntington Station yesterday while sitting in a parked car down the road from a bus stop.

Police say a student at Huntington Station High School reported Tuesday that the suspect was following her and other girls around their bus stop at Crombie Street and Kilburn Avenue about three to four times a week since September. The teenager says Ferranti was offering them rides.

Ferranti was charged with stalking, endangering the welfare of a child and failure to register as a sex offender.

Prosecutors say the 56-year-old has a violent criminal record of 12 felony convictions, including rape and sodomy in 1976.

Ferranti is being held on $300,000 cash bail. He is due back in court Jan. 25.
