OYSTER BAY - ? There is controversy over a plan to allow clams and oysters to be dug mechanically in our East End waterways.

State lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow machine and shellfish digging on the bottom of Peconic Bay. Supporters say it is a practice that has been going on for years in Oyster Bay without any harmful effects. Opponents say it can disrupt the environmental balance of the bay.
