ELMONT - A Nassau County woman says she lost tens of thousands of dollars to con artists claiming to be IRS agents.

The retired Elmont grandmother, who wanted to remain anonymous, says she received daily repeated calls from people saying they were from the IRS.

“They kept calling me calling me telling me they are going to take away my house they are going to take away my car,” she says.

The caller also threatened her with arrest if she did not pay the taxes the fake IRS caller claimed she owed.

The 64-year-old said she became frightened and wired $90,000 in separate checks to two bank accounts, one in the United States and one in Hong Kong.

The District Attorney’s Office, working with Nassau County police, were able to recover $17,000 that the scammers had not yet taken out of the accounts.

Authorities say they are investigating but warn that scammers are operating from overseas and are very difficult to catch.

Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas says this is a recurring scam that seems to target seniors

“The IRS will not say to you, ‘Wire this money right now into this account,’” she says. “That’s not the way the IRS operates.”

The district attorney says if someone calls on a landline and asks for money it is most likely a scam.

Those looking to make complaints regarding instances of tax fraud can call the Nassau County DA’s tax crimes tip line at 516-571-7755.
