ROCKVILLE CENTRE - Wednesday was day two of the controversial Common Core testing in schools and thousands of Long Island students are opting out.

According to Long Island Opt-Out Facebook page, more than 17,000 students have refused to take the ELA test.

In Rockville Centre, the superintendent tells News 12 about 800 students, or about one out of every two students, are not taking the test.

Opt-out activist Jeanette Deutermann told News 12 that she was flooded with messages from panicked parents whose children took the test Tuesday and did not have a good experience. They were asking about refusing today and tomorrow.

News 12 was told that once a student takes any part of the test, it will be scored and will not count as a refusal if they choose to opt out.

The Common Core curriculum exams continue Thursday.

Later this month, third to eighth-grade students will take common core tests for three days on math.
