FLANDERS - Demitri Hampton was taking classes at Suffolk County Community College and had big plans of joining the military, but his life was cut short early yesterday morning when armed men broke down the door of his Flanders home and shot him.

Police say at least two armed men broke into the home on Priscilla Avenue shortly after 3 a.m. Hampton's cousin tells News 12 Long Island that the men held everyone inside the home at gunpoint, but Hampton tried to play the hero by putting all the attention on himself.

The gunmen attacked, and 21-year-old Hampton was shot once in the chest. He was rushed to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say the gunmen fled the home without taking anything. They don't believe Hampton was the intended victim of the shooting, and say he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Police say no arrests have been made in the case. They're asking anyone who may have information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
