Cleanup begins after storm wreaks havoc on Glen Cove park

GLEN COVE - Cleanup efforts are under way at a popular Glen Cove park after a wicked summer storm whipped through and destroyed a local landmark yesterday. Winds gusting up to 70 mph took swipes at Morgan Memorial Park yesterday afternoon, uprooting old trees and snapping off branches. The storm blew down an 80-year-old gazebo that has long been a popular spot for picnics, concerts and even weddings. Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi says restoring the park is his top priority. He says he's already started a gazebo fund and has met with architects on restoring the copper gazebo. Authorities say four fishermen took shelter under the gazebo during the storm. One of them was hurt when it collapsed, and is listed in stable condition at the hospital.
