CENTRAL ISLIP - A Port Jefferson Station man was arraigned on DWI charges Friday stemming from a wrong-way crash on Sunrise Highway.

Police say Christopher O'Brien, 54, of Port Jefferson Station, was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway just east of Horseblock Road when he crashed head-on into another car.

The victim, Thomas D'Eletto, of Aquebogue, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors say O'Brien was driving with a blood alcohol level measured at two and a half times the legal limit. They say the results were from a breathalyzer test at the scene. O'Brien then refused further BAC testing until a court order was obtained.

Prosecutors say O'Brien said he was coming from his girlfriend's home in Medford and admitted to drinking one beer.

D'Eletto was headed to work at the time of the incident.

O'Brien has had prior driving convictions, including a DWI in 1995 and driving while impaired in 2003.

The judge ordered him held on $150,000 cash or $450,000 bond. The judge said more charges could be filed against him.
