HICKSVILLE - A Lynbrook nanny accused of leaving a child inside a hot car while shoplifting is facing new charges.

Christine Nunes, 37, was arrested last month after police found a 3-year-old locked in a sweltering vehicle at the Broadway Mall in Hicksville. Nunes pleaded not guilty in court today.

Police say Nunes was the child's nanny, and she was shoplifting from Target while the girl was in the hot minivan for more than a half hour.

Nunes was charged today with reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.

Nunes’ attorney tells News 12 that she has mental problems and they are considering an insanity defense.

Nationwide, 14 children have died this year after being left alone in a hot car and 45 died last year. Experts say heat stroke can kill in minutes.
