GARDEN CITY - A benefit wrestling tournament was held for a courageous young boy today at Power MMA Gym in Garden City.

Isaiah Bird, 6, of Long Beach, was born without legs, but that has not dampened his fighting spirit.

“I have no legs, but I don't need legs. I'm a wrestler. I'm a gladiator. I'm stronger than anybody,” Bird told News 12.

Despite the fact that a birth defect left Isaiah without legs, he has focused on his strengths to become one of the best young wrestlers in the state.

Currently, Bird is homeless, living in a shelter at a Glen Cove church with his mother and younger brother. When UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman first heard Isaiah's story on News 12, he was inspired to use his star power to host a charity event to help Isaiah.

Weidman teamed up with the Unos Dos Foundation to organize the "Isaiah Bird -- No Excuses" fundraiser, with all the proceeds going to help Isaiah and his family.

For a $5 donation at the door, supporters enjoyed wrestling seminars and meeting top UFC athletes, including the star of the day, Isaiah.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, $3,000 in donations have poured in for Isaiah from as far away as Puerto Rico. Isaiah's mother says the show of support for her son is priceless.
