FARMINGDALE - A ceremony was held today for a 91-year-old World War II veteran from West Islip.

It took nearly 70 years, but Frank McLoughlin was finally honored in Farmingdale today for his heroic actions during World War II.

McLoughlin flew 50 missions as a B-24 turret gunner over the South Pacific.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Barraga says one of his superior officers promised McLoughlin the Distinguished Flying Cross, but because that promise was not put in writing, he never received the prestigious honor.

"He was a hero, and frankly, he deserves the Distinguished Flying Cross, but in lieu of that I thought it was important that we recognize his heroic efforts through this particular ceremony," Baragga said.

McLoughlin was a city firefighter for 40 years following the war.
