SMITHTOWN - A new study finds that an alarming number of Americans are turning to prescription sleeping pills to get a good night's rest.

According to the CDC, nearly 9 million adults say they resort to prescription pills to get to sleep. Experts also say there are millions more who use over-the-counter medicines or herbal remedies.

The study says most of the users are white educated women aged 50 or older with health insurance.

Experts say a rise in social media and electronic distractions, more work hours, financial stress and a rise in obesity-related sleep apnea could be making it harder for people to rest.
