WOODBURY - According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 47 states are now reporting widespread cases of the flu, up from 41 states in the agency's last advisory.

Doctors from the CDC say the flu shot is 62 percent effective, but is the best defense against getting the flu. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has declared a public health emergency in New York, allowing pharmacies to give flu shots to children.

Despite the large number of flu cases, only 24 states are reporting high levels of flu activity, down from 29 states the previous week.
