SOUTHOLD - Suffolk County health officials say they have confirmed a case of whooping cough in the Southold School District. Cases of the virus have also sprung up this year at Chaminade High School in Mineola and Ocean Avenue Elementary in Northport. Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious bacterial disease characterized by violent, uncontrollable coughing. Doctors say initial symptoms are similar to that of the common cold.
