CARLE PLACE - A Carle Place deli owner is putting a different spin on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge fundraiser that has taken social media by storm.

Scott Puckhaber, of Village Delicatessen, sat down in a chair outside his deli Friday night and invited customers to donate to ALS and dump a bucket of ice water on his head. For each donation received, Puckhaber also donated to the cause.

He says he was inspired by former Titans linebacker Tim Shaw who announced this week that he's been diagnosed with ALS.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, attacks nerve cells and ultimately leads to total paralysis.

The Ice Bucket Challenge so far, has raised more than $41 million, which will go toward finding treatments and a cure.

The Associations says only half of Americans even knew of the disease one month ago. About 30,000 Americans are currently battling the condition.
