NORTH MERRICK - Police say a vehicle that was carjacked crashed into a North Merrick elementary school this afternoon following a police pursuit.

One of two suspects has been arrested.

Police confirm to News 12 Long Island that one of the suspects carjacked a 26-year-old Hicksville man, while the second suspect stole his wallet and cell phone and fled in another car. Authorities say they observed the stolen car in North Bellmore and chased the suspect until he turned into the parking lot of Harold Fayette Elementary School in North Merrick. The car hit a police vehicle and then slammed into the building. Investigators say an armed man tried to enter the school, but was tackled by police at the front door. The school was put on lockdown, and parents were alerted through an emergency phone system. Police say they are still searching for the second suspect, who was last seen in Hicksville. Four police officers were injured in the incident, one of whom suffered a concussion.
