RONKONKOMA - A non-fatal car crash caused two suspensions of service along the Long Island Rail Road's Ronkonkoma branch Thursday morning.
The suspensions began when a westbound train from Ronkonkoma struck an abandoned car just east of the Pinelawn station around 6 a.m.
The LIRR decided to pick up commuters in buses, but railroad officials said only two showed up. Those buses took eastbound passengers further east to Greenport.

In a statement, the LIRR said, "The timing of the incident and the overall general inability to bus at rush hour is why buses were not used."
They said that a coach bus only holds about 50 people and the incident train had over 1,000 customers.
In all, four Ronkonkoma trains were canceled and delays were two hours or more. No delays were expected during the evening commute.
