Candidate in 17th District primary calls for recount, blames glitch

HUNTINGTON STATION - Suffolk Legislator Louis D'Amaro (D-Huntington Station) is demanding a hand recount of ballots after attributing his loss in the 17th District race to a computer glitch that caused problems on Primary Day.

At last count, D'Amaro lost to challenger Dennis Garetano by 18 votes out of a total of 172.

Earlier this week, the Board of Elections issued a statement acknowledging the technical problem. On his part, Garetano says if D'Amaro wants a recount, he should get one.

"I don't want to win if it's incorrect," he says.

D'Amaro says the only outcome he wants is a system voters can trust.

"I'm more than willing to accept the results of this primary election, as long as I know and the public is assured that they're accurate," he says.

D'Amaro says he'll take the issue to court if the Board of Elections doesn't do a hand recount.
