HEMPSTEAD - Community leaders are calling for change following the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old girl in Hempstead.

Dejah Joyner was shot in the head earlier this month when a bullet ripped through her Hempstead home while she was eating dinner. Police have not made an arrest in the case.

Statistics compiled by Newsday show that since 2007, 295 people have been wounded by gunfire in Hempstead. Fifty of those shootings were fatal.

Police say most of the shootings were gang- or drug-related.

Nassau County police parked their Crime Stoppers van near the spot where Joyner was shot in the hope that someone will come forward with information to break the silence surrounding her murder.

Police believe someone knows who killed Joyner, but getting information has been challenging.

There is a $75,000 reward for information about the shooting. Police are asking anyone with information on Joyner's shooting or any other acts of violence to contact Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
