Call made for safer Montauk Highway in Lindenhurst after car hits boy

Officials say they are concerned about safety on the highway between Strong and Park Avenues in Lindenhurst. (6/27/14)

LINDENHURST - Village of Lindenhurst residents want the state to improve safety on Montauk Highway following a crash that seriously injured a child.

Just this month, a 10-year-old trying to cross the road was struck by a car.

Residents say the road has turned into a speedway for drivers. They point to the span between South Strong and Park avenues as an extremely dangerous stretch.

Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and other village officials have asked the state Department of Transportation to add a traffic light to the road. They also want the department to consider turning a five-lane portion of the road back to three.

The DOT says previous traffic studies have not indicated a need for additional traffic signals or speed reductions. The department is taking another examination of the area, however, saying “traffic engineers are conducting thorough on-site observations, traffic delay studies, crash analysis and a speed study.”
