CORAM - A bitter cold spell hit Long Island today, bringing with it brutal and potentially dangerous temperatures that dipped to 5 degrees for the first time since March 2009.

Volunteers with the Lighthouse Mission are among those who hit the streets and brought basic essentials such as food, coats, hats and gloves to Long Island's homeless and needy.

If anyone knows a person who spends their night or days out the cold, there are numbers to call to get them a warm bed.

In Nassau County, the number is 1-866-927-6233. In Suffolk, it is 631-854-9935 during the day and 631-854-9100 after 4:30 p.m.
