Brookhaven sets crosshairs on Coram paintball field

CORAM - For 27 years, Long Island paintball lovers have come to Cousins Paintball in Coram to spread out and play on 88 heavily wooded acres. Those acres became part of the Overton Nature Preserve several years ago, when the Town of Brookhaven purchased the land. Now, Cousins says it is being forced to leave.Brookhaven officials say the land is a wildlife sanctuary that is necessary for groundwater regeneration. Town Supervisor Mark Lesko says that the playing field backs up to residential neighborhoods, which he says could be potentially hazardous.Town officials say they tried to work with Cousins to find another town property to move to, but they say it just didn't work out. The owners of Cousins say that finding a private parcel of land won't be easy, but say they'll take their best shot. They say some 50 people will be out of work if they have to close.
