Brookhaven mulls expanding unpopular Yaphank landfill

YAPHANK - Officials in the Town of Brookhaven say they're considering a proposal to expand a landfill in Yaphank to help balance the budget. Neighbors who've coped with dusty debris and a foul stench from the dump for years say they're shocked to hear that instead of closing the landfill down, officials may make it larger. Just last week, a community group called the Landfill Liaison Committee met to discuss ways to get the landfill shuttered for good. However, Town Supervisor Mark Lesko says the landfill is "critical to the financial stability" of Brookhaven. He says a temporary increase in the landfill's capacity would generate revenue to help plug the town's projected multimillion-dollar budget hole. The Landfill Liaison Committee says it will meet next week to brainstorm in hopes of finding a compromise.
