STONY BROOK - Brookhaven Town officials say that a no road sign ordinance has been on the books for years. Now, they are beginning to enforce it.

Officials say several tons of street signs have been collected from utility poles and the “public right-of-way” or about 5 to 8 feet in from a road’s curb.

They say flagrant violators of the ordinance could face fines up to $250.

Some businesses that posted signage throughout the town say they were not aware of the ordinance.

Brookhaven officials say they will recycle the collected signs in recognition of Earth Day.
