MASTIC - The Town of Brookhaven is cracking down on absentee landlords and substandard living conditions.

While some landlords have already been fined in Mastic, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine says there is a long way to go to combat this problem.

The town says this is a long-standing problem, with at least 100 absentee-landlord cases each week.

Officials say one absentee landlord recently cleaned up a house, but only after facing thousands of dollars in fines and the possibility of going to trial.

Romaine says a large number of homeowners and absentee landlords have taken single-family homes and converted them illegally into rooming houses, some holding as many as 20 to 25 people. He says the people living in these houses are forced to live in substandard conditions.
