BRENTWOOD - A Brentwood man who admitted to killing his elderly mother left jail a free man today after he was sentenced to time served. Juan Gonzalez, 70, pleaded guilty to suffocating his 98-year-old mother with a plastic bag last May after finding out that he had skin cancer. Prosecutors say Gonzalez feared he was dying and that no one would be able to care for her. Gonzalez served six months in prison. His attorney says he worked out a deal with prosecutors for his release. Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota says cases like these are very unusual and have to be treated uniquely.
