MANHASSET - A Minnesota 2-year-old with a rare and serious birth defect traveled halfway across the country for treatment at a Long Island hospital. Mathewas Mekonnen had a brain lesion that caused uncontrollable laughing seizures and speech problems. His parents took him to several specialists, who told them there was no cure. Eventually, Mathewas' mother found a website with information on a life-changing surgery. The condition is so rare that only a handful of surgeons can operate on it. The family came to North Shore University Hospital and Mathewas is now recovering from two brain surgeries. His parents say he's doing fantastic and hasn't had any laughing seizures.
