SMITHTOWN - The weight of the accumulated snow caused major problems at a Smithtown bowling alley on Saturday.

The roof of the alley on Landing Avenue partially collapsed under the weight of heavy snow.

No one was injured, but the collapse set in motion a chain of events that led to a gas and water main break.

Smithtown fire officials say they were alerted to a problem at the alley by an automatic alarm at around 4:30 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, they found a 75-foot section of the roof caved in.

The alley was unoccupied at the time, but first responders said they smelled gas.

Crews from National Grid said they quickly shut down the gas and electrical lines as water shot 30 feet into the air from the damaged main.

LIRR officials were also on the scene surveying the damage as water continued to spill out onto the nearby tracks.
