WYANDANCH - There could be relief on the way for cash-strapped Long Island commuters thanks to a new state effort to expand a tax break for users of mass transit. Budget cuts in Washington have seen tax breaks for commuters dwindle. People who use parking garages or take rails and buses used to qualify for a tax break that's nearly twice as large as the one they get now. A new proposal under review by the New York lawmakers would have the state cover some costs to restore the tax break for commuters. The bill has already passed in the state Senate, but is currently stalled in the Assembly.
