Bill calls for clampdown on smoking in cars

WOODBURY - Smokers in Nassau County may soon be prevented from lighting one up in their own vehicles.

A bill is being introduced today in the county Legislature that would ban smoking in cars with riders under the age of 18.

Medical experts say exposure to second-hand smoke inside a car is 50 times worse than in the outside air.

Supporters of the legislation say it is all about keeping kids safe from second-hand smoke.  Opponents to the bill say it is another government intrusion into people's private lives.

Democratic legislators in Nassau County say they have called on the Republican presiding officer to bring the bill up for a vote. A spokesman in Peter Schmitt?s office says it's under review.
