DIX HILLS - Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) has proposed a bill that would force the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to speed up the disability benefits approval process for the country's veterans.

The bill states that if the VA has not answered a claim within 125 days, the veteran would automatically get a 40 percent disability rating.

Currently, 890,000 of America's veterans are waiting for the VA to approve their benefits. Israel says the average wait for approval is 642 days.

The VA says it is working to move to an all-digital system that would help speed up the process, but that won't be done until 2015.
