BABYLON - Suffolk has a new county executive today for the first time in eight years.

Democrat Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone has defeated Republican County Treasurer Angie Carpenter for Steve Levy's job. Bellone beat out Carpenter with 57 percent of the vote.

Carpenter has spent nearly 20 years in county government. Bellone praised her after she conceded last night saying he looks forward to working with her to make the county better.

Suffolk County is facing a number of financial problems including a $135 million deficit in its budget. New County Executive Bellone said he is ready to start solving the county's economic problems.

"With the model we have in Babylon...we can make it more efficient and protect taxpayers," said Bellone. For an interview with Steve Bellone after his Suffolk exec. win go to Channel 612 on your iO Digital Cable Box and select iO Extra.
