Bellone outlines plan to close Suffolk budget deficit

HAUPPAUGE - ? Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released his new budget plan today and talked about making some tough choices as he moves toward balancing the county?s budget.

The 2012 Suffolk County budget gap will be an estimated $148 million and will balloon to an estimated $349 million in 2013. The county finished 2011 with a $33 million deficit.

Combined, the county would be in the hole for more than $530 million over a three-year span.

Bellone says more than 600 county employees could see pink slips beginning next month. Officials say the county will also raise some surcharges and spread out pension payments.
