Bellmore residents fight proposed cell phone tower

BELLMORE - Bellmore residents are trying to fight the state on a proposed 120-foot cell phone tower across the street from their homes.

The tower would be built in a wooded area located off of the Southern State Parkway near Bellmore Road, despite a law in the Town of Hempstead that bans towers within 1,500 feet of residential areas.

Town officials say the property is owned by the state and therefore, they have no say in the matter.

A public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at the Wellington C. Mepham High School.

An exclusive News 12 Long Island/Hofstra Poll asked residents across the Island about cell phone towers. Of those polled, 34 percent said they didn't mind them and 31 percent said they are dangerous and unsightly.
