BRENTWOOD - A mother from Bay Shore is facing a felony charge after she allegedly drove while intoxicated and flipped her car with her two young children in tow.

Police say 26-year-old Alba Alonso lost control of her vehicle and struck a curb on Candlewood Drive in Brentwood. The vehicle overturned, and the children, ages 1 and 3, suffered minor injuries.

Alonso sobbed in court today as she pleaded not guilty to a charge of aggravated DWI under Leandra's Law.

Alonso has two prior misdemeanors and an open petit larceny charge. The judge said she has also failed to appear in court several times. She was issued a restraining order to stay away from her two young children.

Her family did not want to speak on camera, but her mother told News 12 that Alonso is a "good mother" and that the family "just wants this all to go away."

Defense attorney Alonzo Jacobs told the judge that his client works as a certified nurse's assistant and sought to dispute the allegation that his client was intoxicated. He said he believes she will be vindicated.

Alonso took a blood test at the scene and the results are pending.

She was ordered held on $15,000 bail and is due back in court on Friday.
