HEMPSTEAD - A basketball tournament in Hempstead was held Saturday to honor a Hempstead teen that was killed by an unlicensed driver.

Ka'Juan Polley, of Hempstead, was struck and killed in 2015 by the driver while he was riding his bike at the corner of Front Street and Cameron Avenue.

Friends of Ka'Juan say they have helped his mother, Jennifer, persevere through tough times.

"I know how hard it is for her to go through this pain, so we just try to stick around and help her as the days go on," says Dashawn Meadors.

"I call them my little angels," says Jennifer Smith. "I talk to them every day."

She says she started the nonprofit "3's for Kay Foundation" in her son's memory as a way of helping youths in the community.

"I just felt that I wanted everyone to have the opportunities that Ka'Juan had," says Smith. "Because he played basketball and he was good, he was able to have different opportunities and I wanted the kids to see that too."

Saturday's basketball tournament was the second annual event in Ka'Juan's honor.
