CARLE PLACE - The price of bacon is going up.

Since June 2013, the average price of bacon has risen 14 percent to $6.11 per pound.  Since June 2012, the price has increased by a staggering 41 percent.

Analysts say the price increase is due to a shortage of pigs. They say millions have been wiped out by a virus.

Experts say increased demand is also a part of the problem.

Thomas Kokoulas, of Thomas's Ham & Eggery Diner in Westbury, told News 12 that he has had to raise prices on his menu.

“Just straight bacon and eggs is $7.75 now, it was about $7.25 before,” he said.

Many diners told News 12 that bacon remains their favorite breakfast meat.
