STONY BROOK - April kicks off Autism Awareness month.

With one in 68 children worldwide diagnosed with the disorder, experts say early detection is key.

“What we know is if we get an early diagnosis early intervention is a key to helping these children,” says Dr. Paul Mitrani.

The hope is more awareness will result in earlier detection. There are several signs parents should look for around a child's first birthday, including difficulty sleeping and disinterest in their surroundings. Another sign is hyperfocus on a particular subject or object.
