ROCKVILLE CENTRE - The Rockville Centre woman accused of being drunk behind the wheel and killing her friend in a crash appeared in court today for her arraignment.
Asya Ulmer, 21, has been charged with driving while under the influence and second-degree vehicular manslaughter. Her bail was set at $20,000 bond or $10,000 cash.
Police say Ulmer was drunk when she crashed her BMW into a tractor-trailer that was parked on North Centre Avenue in Rockville Centre on Sunday.
Ulmer's passenger, Jennifer Alexis, 21, died at the scene.
According to court documents, Ulmer told police that Alexis had grabbed her arm just before the crash. A transcript of oral statements that Ulmer gave to police reads, "My friend told me to turn and I didn't want to. She grabbed my arm and I turned the wheel. I had one Long Island iced tea."
Frederick Brewington, Ulmer's defense attorney, would not discuss what the two friends were doing or where they were before the crash.
Ulmer faces up to seven years in prison if convicted. She is due back in court on Sept. 18.
