AMITYVILLE - An associate principal at an Amityville elementary school has been fired just days after claiming racial discrimination against the school district.

Rodney Wilkins claims he was isolated at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School because he was black and forced to work out of the school kitchen for two months after complaining about how he was being treated.

Wilkins announced two days ago that he was filing a complaint with the state's Division of Human Rights.

With litigation pending, the School Board voted unanimously to terminate Wilkins from his position at a public meeting Wednesday. They declined to explain why he was terminated.

"We simply cannot discuss personnel matters at a public board meeting. Individuals have a right to privacy, and we cannot violate that right," said Superintendent Mary Kelly.

News 12 asked to speak with Kelly before the meeting, but a spokesperson referred to a statement from two days ago, in which the Amityville Union Free School District insists it acted within its lawful authority with respect to Wilkins.

The lack of a response regarding their decision, combined with the board's departure into an executive session less than two hours into the meeting, angered those in attendance.

The board did allow certain people to ask multiple questions during the meeting.
