HAUPPAUGE - Democrats in the state Assembly are making a push to extend the controversial millionaire?s tax, which is set to expire this year.

Some Long Island residents have been hit hard by the tax, which kicks in for households making $200,000 a year.

Assemblyman Bob Sweeney (D-Lindenhurst) says it doesn?t affect 95 percent of New York State taxpayers and that with a lot of services and jobs at stake, extending the measure makes sense.

However, Republicans are against the idea, arguing the tax impacts more than just the wealthy, particularly on the Island where they say many residents already pay very high property taxes.
