Asian Tiger Mosquito creates health concerns on Long Island

WOODBURY - A new species of mosquito is creating new health concerns on Long Island.

The aggressive Asian Tiger Mosquito can spread several tropical viruses, including the West Nile virus and dengue fever. The symptoms for dengue fever include head and body aches, high fever and bleeding of the gums. 

Lawmakers are urging the government to help by doing more research on the new species and by educating the public on how they can prevent being bitten.

Experts say the best ways to protect against mosquitoes are to use bug spray and wear long sleeve shirts. They also recommend removing all standing water from homeowner property so mosquitoes don't have a place to breed.
