HAUPPAUGE - A day after Suffolk residents voted in Democrat Steve Bellone as their next executive, county lawmakers approved a budget that calls for tax hikes and layoffs. The plan includes 88 layoffs, far less than the 700 that current County Executive Steve Levy (R-Suffolk) had proposed. It also calls for a tax hike that amounts to about $2 per month for most Suffolk residents.Critics, including some Suffolk lawmakers, blasted the budget for putting more of a burden on residents rather than dipping into county reserve funds. Executive-elect Bellone wouldn't directly say if he supported the budget, but said it appeared that lawmakers were taking a responsible approach. In a statement, Levy called the budget the "worst ever."
