ISLANDIA - Arson investigators were on the scene of Jet Sanitation in the Village of Islandia Wednesday after a massive fire broke out at the facility in the early morning hours.

Firefighters were called to the building located at Blydenburgh Road and Veterans Memorial Highway around 2:30 a.m. A total of 22 departments and seven ambulance companies responded to the fire.

Hauppauge Fire Chief Steve Feron says traffic had to be stopped on the busy highway so water hoses could be strung across the roadway from additional nearby fire hydrants.

The fire marshal says one of the Jet Sanitation buildings was condemned and will be torn down due to extensive damage.

Fire Marshal Mike Zaleski says the state Department of Conservation was on the scene to conduct air sampling and water tests. He says they were not affected by the fire. Workers and nearby residents had been concerned about toxic fumes coming from the burning recycling plant.

It has not yet been determined what sparked the fire. There were no injuries.
