Armed man reported at Merrick station was police officer

Police responded to the Merrick station at around 8 a.m. after someone called 911 and reported an armed man boarding a train. (February 6, 2013)

MERRICK - The Long Island Rail Road is operating normally this evening after a brief gun scare during the Wednesday morning rush.

Authorities responded to the Merrick station at around 8 a.m. after someone called 911 and reported an armed man boarding a train.

Upon arrival, police say they searched a van, which was empty. The train had already left the station.

It was later determined that the man was a police officer.
