RIVERHEAD - An Amityville woman has been charged with four counts of animal cruelty after police say she left two pit bull puppies for dead.

Police say 21-year-old Swaneka P.J. Danzler dumped two pit bull puppies down a 6-foot well at Riverhead Animal Hospital.

The puppies were severely malnourished and suffering from a skin infection called mange. One puppy died on Christmas of its injuries.

Police say they received an anonymous tip that led them to Danzler, who they say admitted to the crime.

Danzler will be back in court at the end of January to answer to the animal cruelty charges. If convicted, she could face up to a year in jail.
