FARMINGDALE - As we kick off the Labor Day weekend, Long Islanders are saluting the men and women whose work helped preserve our freedom.

News 12 Long Island's Ty Chandler was at the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport in Farmingdale getting an inside look at some military weapons built by dedicated workers.

The weapons featured range from the WWII Thunderbolt fighter built at Republic Airport 70 years ago to the Northrop Grumman Prowler that has protected American carriers standing off the Middle East.

In addition, throughout this weekend many WWII aircraft will fly, including a formation flight in NYC Harbor that honors the memories of those who died on 9/11.
