CENTRAL ISLIP - The man accused of driving while high on drugs and crashing into a string of cars in Sayville over the weekend was arraigned in court today.

Prosecutors say 46-year-old Thomas Herman was high on drugs when he zipped down Main Street at speeds of up to 100 mph on Sunday. They say he smashed into seven cars, killing 82-year-old West Islip resident Sam Longo, who was behind the wheel of the final car that Herman hit.

Herman has been charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and leaving the scene of the accident. Prosecutors say he will likely face upgraded charges with he returns to court on Jan. 23.

Herman told police at the scene that he had taken prescription pills, according to prosecutors. Herman submitted to a substance test, but authorities have not said what drugs were in his system at the time.

Officials say Herman has a criminal history that includes forgery and two prior arrests for driving while intoxicated.
