CENTRAL ISLIP - The alleged drunken driver accused of rear-ending a Suffolk County police officer was arraigned today.

Salvatore Distefano was charged with DWI and assault. Officials say they are still awaiting blood test results to determine his blood alcohol level.

After the accident, Distefano admitted that he had been drinking a few beers, according to police. News 12 Long Island was told that Distefano also failed a field sobriety test.

Police say officer Brian Smales, of the highway patrol bureau, was conducting a follow-up investigation into a fatal accident that occurred earlier Sunday morning.

Officials say Smales was in his cruiser on the right shoulder of Sunrise Highway with his emergency lights on when Distefano rear-ended the vehicle. Smales' patrol car was outside of the lane of traffic when it was hit, investigators say.

Distefano is being held on $5,000 bail and is due back in court on March 11.
